The Surin Elephant Round-up, the grandest annual cultural event of Thailand northeastern province, is being held at a number of venues in downtown Surin until Sunday.

A massive fair is happening every day from afternoon until late into the night, featuring a variety of performances, amusement rides, sales of food and hand-made goods from all districts of the province.

As the national symbol of Thailand, elephants are admired for their strength, endurance and intelligence.

Currently, an estimated 2,000 elephants are living in the wild in Thailand and a similar number in captivity. In the wild, they roam through the deep jungle and in the country's protected national parks.
